A Message from our Director

Dear friends,

I’ve been a Christian for most of my life.  In part, what that means is that I’ve tried (and “tried” is clearly not the same as always being successful) to live in such a way that honors our great God, while pursuing His plans for me.  Most of the time I can’t say that the details of His plans seem perfectly clear.  In my experience as a Christian, His will or His purposes for my life have seemed more like guidelines or like the “bumpers” at a bowling alley.  There are, however, a few moments that I can look back on and see that His plans or His calling for me have been abundantly clear.  Those moments are rare, but very real- they are often hard- and often require a great deal of surrender.

A little over 14 years ago, I experienced one of those “abundantly clear moments.”   It happened while having lunch with a good friend, pastor Dave Annan when he sensed the Lord asking him to help me start a ministry that would provide care for pastors.  That initial idea was so foreign, so crazy, and seemingly insurmountable.  But God…He has His plans.  Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us that “His ways are not ours” and “His ways are higher than ours.”  The moment in that restaurant was so powerful that it became an inescapable passion and pursuit for me, and the beginning of Energize Ministries.

What started out as a crazy unknown concept, has now become the undeniable evidence of God tending to the needs of His servants.   Over the last 14 years we have seen God provide encouragement, refreshment, and recreational retreats for thousands of pastors and their families in ways that can only be explained by pointing directly back to Him.  He alone is the provider of all that we have to offer.  Yes, He uses people like you and me to facilitate His care- but this ministry of preventive care and prayer support for our nation’s pastors is- and always has been all His.  I KNOW He cares for His servants, and I KNOW He provides a great deal of that care through Energize Ministries.

I’ve seen it from the very beginning.  I’ve seen Him assemble people, and places, and all kinds of unique resources into an organized system that provides confidential care and prayer support to pastors and their families all over the United States and beyond.  The realities of watching all this unfold have been extraordinary, and sometimes nothing short of miraculous.  At times, this also gets to be consuming and exhausting- and the time has come for me to take a break.  It’s time for me to “practice what I preach,” and embrace the ministry of rest and refreshment.

Taking personal time for respite is not something that comes naturally to me, but this is one those “clear moments” of what I believe God is asking of me.  This is indeed a Biblical command and something Jesus was clearly intentional about (Mathew and John both talk about Jesus going into the mountain(s) to be alone and pray).  Providing “R&R” time for others is a core component of Energize Ministries, and as it turns out we happen to have a very special mountain dedicated exclusively to that purpose- the Energize Lodge and Retreat Center.  So, over the next couple of months, I am planning to spend a good bit of my time on that mountain much like Jesus did, and even as Moses did when God called him to it…listening, praying, and being in the presence of where God is so clearly at work- and where I believe He has much greater plans for us.

There is a new season ahead for Energize Ministries.  The timing of this sabbatical for me is not coincidental, this is His timing, and this is a good thing.  I’m looking forward to what He has planned. “To Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.”  Eph. 3:20-21. Whatever your connection to this ministry is, please continue abundantly praying for and supporting the entire Energize Ministries team and all the pastors and families in our care.  I look forward to re-connecting with all of you early this fall.

Serving His servants,

Andy Bowersox | Executive Director
