Turning Tables

Turning Tables

“It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables…but we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”      Acts 6:2,4

If you’ve ever worked in food service, you know how fast-paced and stressful a job it can be. It takes a team of staff members, each with specific jobs, working together to get the job done.  While the restaurant manager is busy making sure the business runs smoothly, the kitchen staff prepares the food, the wait-staff ensures that the guests are well taken care of and the bus staff cleans up.  Can you imagine how a restaurant would run if one person tried to do it all?   Nothing would get done well, and before long the poor guy doing everything would burn out.
One person doing everything doesn’t work in food service and it doesn’t work in churches either.  Your pastor’s main job should be to study the word and stay spiritually fed so he can, in turn, feed and nurture his congregation.  However, when he is busy with a multitude of other jobs that could easily be handled by the congregation, it takes his focus away from this priority.
You can be the one that makes a difference for your pastor today.  Look for opportunities to serve in your church and encourage others to do the same, enabling your pastor to focus on the job to which he has been called.
